Our wonderful CEO Glenda Stevens has been recognised as the ACT 2024 Senior Woman of the Year for her work as founding CEO of Fearless Women. A former Air Force Air Traffic Controller and past Chair of ACTCOSS, she also volunteers with several community organisations that focus on empowering women and girls.
Glenda believes that her journey has been like that of many women – some wonderful and some challenging times; times of joy and also of great sadness; bewilderment plus awe, a bit of remorse, some surprises, and plenty of optimism.
At 18 she joined the RAAF, at 25 she became a mother, at 35 she went to university, at 50 she came to Canberra, and… at 60 plus 1, she can confidently say ‘life only gets better’. “Somewhere along the road you learn who you are, about your world, and where you fit into it. You gain the confidence to have a voice and to boldly speak out.”
Del Shakespear (pictured above with Glenda), a trailblazer for gender equality and inclusivity in sports in the ACT, and one of Fearless Women’s Board Members, received the Special Commendation Award for her contributions as one of Canberra’s outstanding sportswomen and mentors.
The awards recognise women and gender diverse people who have made an outstanding contribution to the lives of women and girls in the ACT.
One of this year’s International Women’s Day themes is #InspireInclusion, and both women are remarkable role models for young women and girls in the community. They certainly inspire us and what we do at Fearless Women!
The other International Women Day 2024 theme is Count her in – Invest in Women. This is what Fearless Women does – collectively we forge women’s equality. When women feel valued and are inspired, there is courage, belonging and huge empowerment.
Congratulations Glenda and Del for your work inspiring girls and young women in the ACT.
